Digital technology continues to develop and helps with multiple aspects of our daily lives. Multiple options are available to aid veterinarians with increased accuracy and convenience. A few of the benefits of electronic options for CVI include: utilizing equipment already on-hand (smartphones, tablets, computers), no postage stamps, no trips to the post office, automatic submission to the DAH office (with some electronic options).
Options are listed below with a few of their highlights. Check out the following comparison table. There are options for any situation, with or without internet access and with or without a smartphone.
There is likely no requirement to purchase new equipment. Different products work with different situations and comfort levels. Web-based solutions work on devices with internet access. The office computer may be used to generate CVIs with a fillable pdf. Other products will automatically submit the CVI to the DAH office. And, for those working in areas of the state with limited to no cell service, there is a solution for that.
After a short learning period, electronic CVIs are faster to fill out and eliminate handwriting errors. They are more cost effective to send to the DAH office: FREE. There is no sending hard copies through the mail, nor paying for the paper CVI books. They reduce compliance errors as it is impossible to submit a partially completed CVI through these electronic options. They are also able to include any number of animals in groups or with individual IDs, eliminating the need for multiple CVIs for a single animal movement.
Pros of Using Electronic CVIs:
- Time savings & improved efficiency
- No postage costs
- Import multiple ID numbers into the certificate
- Improved legibility and accuracy
- Allows for real-time information exchange
Cons of Using Electronic CVIs:
- Staff training and variable proficiency
- Learning curve
- Initial investment costs in technology
