  • Big Blue River Compact Meeting to Be Held May 18

    The 43rd annual meeting of the Kansas–Nebraska Big Blue River Compact Administration will be held in the Large Assembly room at the offices of the Manhattan Fire Department, located at 2000 Denison Ave., Manhattan, Kan., on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. Anyone interested in water related activities within the Big Blue and Little Blue River Basins in Kansas and Nebraska is encouraged to attend.
  • Flag Smut Survey to Be Conducted This Spring

    Kansas wheat farmers should stay vigilant in scouting for wheat disease, especially flag smut, which was detected in Kansas in 2015 for the first time since the 1930s, although it was only found in low levels in a small portion of the wheat crop. The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA), in coordination with the Kansas State University (KSU) Department of Plant Pathology, will be conducting a targeted flag smut survey throughout May and June in several counties within the state.
  • May is Proclaimed Kansas Beef Month

    The month of May has been declared Kansas Beef Month, according to a proclamation signed by Governor Sam Brownback. Kansas is home to some of the highest quality cattle in the United States, and the state’s ranches and feedyards play a key role in the state’s agricultural success.

  • Organic Farmers Encouraged to Apply for Cost Share Program

    Kansas organic producers or farmers interested in receiving organic certification are encouraged to apply to receive cost share funds. The National Organic Certification Cost Share Program is funded by the 2014 Farm Bill and can assist Kansas farmers in paying for organic certification or recertification.
  • Kansas Delegation Travels to Thailand for Petfood Forum and Trade Show

    A delegation of Kansas pet food industry company representatives traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to attend Petfood Forum Asia and the VICTAM Asia trade show March 29–31, 2016. The delegation was able to assess current trends in the pet food market and establish business connections in Asia.
  • Comment Period for Quivira Impairment Complaint Extended

    The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has extended the comment period for the first draft of the initial report on the investigation of the impairment complaint by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service (FWS) regarding Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Kansas Department of Agriculture Supports Continued Wildfire Relief Efforts

    Firefighters, aided by rain and snow in the region, have made significant headway in controlling the Anderson Creek Fire in Barber and Comanche counties. Farm, ranch and industry organizations including Kansas Farm Bureau and the Kansas Livestock Association are focusing their efforts on how to assist farmers and ranchers who have been affected by the largest wildfire in Kansas history.
